Breathing techniques to de-stress & sleep better

Posted on: 07-07-2026

Ever lie awake in bed with your eyes open, mind racing over what you need to do tomorrow or replaying the day's events in your head? You are not the only one. It is the same for most of us; we try to sleep by switching off the lights, only to find that we have not switched off our brains.

At Sleepwell, we know restful sleep isn’t just about lying on a mattress. It is deeply connected with how your body and breathing respond to your environment. This is why we are exploring the power of breathing techniques for sleep: simple and natural techniques designed to soothe the body’s nervous system, calming the mind and body to sleep effortlessly.

And when paired with the right sleep surface, like our Sleepwell Pro Spinetech Mattress, designed with 100% natural latex and IAOS-recommended spine support, your body truly gets the rest it deserves, inside and out.

Why breathing matters before bed

Your breath is your body’s built-in stress switch. While you are feeling anxious, your breaths usually become shallow. That is when you start feeling nervous. On the other hand, when you take deep breaths, especially through your diaphragm, your body begins to relax, your breathing is calm, and your body is signalling that it is okay to surrender.

As indicated by the 2019 study from Frontiers in Psychology, slow-paced breathing is one of the fastest methods to improve rested states. This is especially essential while sleeping, as it aids the heart rate and parasympathetic activity.

The most effective breathing techniques for sleep

1) The 4-7-8 sleep method

You’ve probably heard of this one; it’s famous for a reason. The 4 7 8 sleep method slows your heart rate and shifts your focus away from stress.

How to do it:

  • Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 seconds
  • Hold your breath for 7 seconds
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds
  • Repeat 4–5 times

The longer you exhale, the more your relaxation response is triggered and the more you ease into stillness. It’s one of the easiest breathing techniques for sleep that works in just minutes.

2) Diaphragmatic breathing (a.k.a. Belly breathing)

If you’re used to breathing from your chest, this will feel different initially, but it’s deeply grounding.

Here’s how:

  • Lie flat on your back (ideally on your Sleepwell Pro Spinetech Mattress)
  • Keep one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach
  • Take an inhale through your nose and let your stomach rise while keeping your chest relaxed
  • Slowly exhale and feel your stomach deflating

The diaphragmatic breathing method helps exchange oxygen fully while calming the nervous system. It is advisable to do this breathing technique for 5-10 minutes to relax after a stressful day.

3) Box breathing

Used by athletes, yogis, and even Navy SEALs, this technique is great for anxiety and sleep alike.

It’s simple:

  • Inhale for 4 seconds
  • Hold your breath for 4 seconds
  • Exhale for 4 seconds
  • Hold again for 4 seconds

That’s one “box.” Do 5–6 rounds. This type of deep breathing exercise resets your mind and helps block out distractions.

4) Alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana)

A classic from yoga and deep breathing, this technique balances both brain hemispheres and promotes clarity.

To practice:

  • Sit or lie comfortably
  • Close your right nostril with your thumb, and inhale through the left
  • Close the left nostril with your ring finger, and exhale through the right
  • Inhale through the right, then switch
  • Repeat for 2–3 minutes

This practice is perfect before bedtime, especially if your mind feels scattered.

Your mattress matters, too

Even the best breathing method for sleep won’t help much if your mattress isn’t doing its job. That’s why we created the Sleepwell Pro Spinetech, India’s first mattress recommended by the Indian Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (IAOS) for spinal support. Here’s what makes it different:

  • Pure Sleepwell natural latex – Unlike blended synthetics, ours is 100% natural and sustainably sourced for true pressure relief and comfort.
  • 3-zoned profiled Resitec® foam – Special contouring provides even pressure distribution and promotes airflow essential for all-night comfort.
  • Euro top quilted finish – A European-style comfort layer that adds depth and a premium sleep feel.
  • Anti-skid base – Keeps the mattress stable while you stretch, breathe, and easily sleep.

Designed with six smart layers, the Pro Spinetech is your partner for deep sleep and back wellness.

Why yoga and deep breathing go hand in hand

The relationship between physical movement and breathing is significant. A short yoga session and breathing put together bring physical and mental relaxation. Brisk movement and yoga flow might not always fit into our busy schedules, but breathing at the right times does.

  • A few seated forward bends
  • Child’s pose (Balasana)
  • Legs-up-the-wall (Viparita Karani)

Follow that up with 5 minutes of the 4 7 8 sleep method, and your body will thank you.

When to use these breathing techniques

Timing matters. Try these tips:

  • Right before bed (after brushing teeth, before lights out)
  • When you wake up at 3 AM and can't get back to sleep
  • Midday during a stressful moment or screen fatigue
  • During travel to reset your body clock

After brushing your teeth, you can breathe right before bed and while waking at 3 AM. Deep breathing can be practiced at specific times and night, but consistency makes a difference, too. The environment, the bed, the light, and sleep routines matter too.

Final thoughts

Breathing helps the body sleep by triggering signals that relax muscles, calm the body and help the body feel light. Breathing patterns and depressed muscles help the body and mind take a break while yoga mat stretches and deep diaphragmatic breathing support practiced muscles, putting the mind at ease.

And when your mattress has your back, literally like our Sleepwell Pro Spinetech, your body follows suit.

So tonight, try this: Lie down. Close your eyes. Inhale for 4. Hold for 7. Exhale for 8. Feel the calm. Feel the support. Wake up and reflect: "Did you sleep well?" If the answer is no, the SpineTech mattress could be your key to deep, rejuvenating sleep.
